Industry Report - Industry Products Chapter
The term ‘pesticide' covers a wide range of products used to prevent, repel, mitigate or destroy unwanted pest organisms. Most of these products are manufactured, patented and marketed by agrochemical companies that operate on a global scale. Pesticides contain an active ingredient that is designed to disrupt the biochemical and physiological processes in a pest organism, essentially killing it. Most pesticides are derived from engineered chemicals, some are natural (such as pyrethrins, which are obtained from chrysanthemums) and others are altered versions of natural chemicals. Therefore pesticides can be classed as inorganic, synthetic or biological (bio-pesticides).
