Flat glass is integral to the construction of buildings and many vehicles, whilst also being an important input for some appliances and furnishings. Flat glass manufacturers produce float, rolled, drawn and blown flat glass sheets that are sold to downstream industries for further fabrication or to end users in the building market. The UK Flat Glass Manufacturing industry is dominated by three global companies: Pilkington, Guardian Industries and Saint-Gobain Glass. Of the seven enterprises in the industry, there are three companies operating six float glass plants.
The North West
Pilkington operates three float plants and a small rolled glass plant, all located in Merseyside in the North West of England. St Helens is the home to the original Pilkington operations and where the float glass production method was invented and developed. From its plants in St Helens and the neighbouring Cowley Hill plant, Pilkington can easily supply much of the UK automotive manufacturing market (located near Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool) and can use good transport links to access the national building markets. Many of the downstream glass-fabricating firms are located in the North West.
