The Electricians industry operates in all building, infrastructure and industrial markets. Electricians install new electrical, communications and industrial equipment, and repair and maintain existing electrical equipment and fixtures. The industry is primarily affected by trends in downstream demand from construction markets. It took longer than expected for the protracted economic recovery to lead to increased demand for industry services, although spending on essential maintenance and repair services provided some respite to operators at the start of the period.

The Electricians industry is highly fragmented, as the high number of enterprises and the proliferation of smaller firms demonstrate. The four largest enterprises – SSE Contracting, Imtech Technical Services, N G Bailey and Skanska Rashleigh Weatherfoil – are estimated to account for only 6% of industry revenue in 2016-17. The industry is characterised by its many small-scale, regionally dispersed contracting firms, although the largest players operate across Britain and have multiple establishments. The fragmentation of the industry is evident from the distribution of enterprises by employment size. According to the Office for National Statistics, 91.5% of enterprises employed fewer than 10 employees in 2015 and 81.2% employed fewer than five.
