The Bottled Water Production industry has gone from strength to strength in the past five years as consumers have switched to bottled water as a healthy alternative to soft drinks. Thanks to firms' efforts to underline the health benefits of drinking water, through extensive marketing campaigns and sports sponsorships, operators have been able to convince shoppers to pay for a product that is available to them at home for a much lower cost. Over the five years through 2016-17, industry revenue is expected to increase at a compound annual rate of 3.5%, reaching £834.5 million. During the current year, revenue is projected to rise by 2.9%.

To be classified as either spring or mineral water, water needs to be bottled at the source. Water from springs undergoes minimal purification and, in the case of mineral water, none at all, so it is important that there is little pollution in the catchment area of the water source. This tends to mean that springs are located away from densely populated areas of the United Kingdom in regions with high rainfall.
In terms of establishment numbers, Wales is the largest region in the industry. It receives high levels of annual rainfall and the mountainous terrain contributes to its low population density.
