Industry Analysis & Industry Trends

The Aquaculture industry is expected to grow strongly over the five-year period ending 2016-17. Industry revenue is led by salmon growth. Trout, mussels and other shellfish are also farmed, but nearly 95% of industry revenue is estimated to come from salmon farming. The industry is dominated by farming of Atlantic salmon in the Scottish lochs and throughout the island coastlines of Scotland. The performance of the industry is highly dependent on trends in global salmon prices and supply conditions in competing producer countries. Industry Report - Industry Products Chapter

Atlantic salmon is a major product farmed in the industry, mostly in Scotland. Wild salmon stocks have been declining for decades, but salmon aquaculture has expanded steadily since the 1970s. Over the past five years salmon stocks have fluctuated. Adverse weather conditions led to salmon stocks decreasing in 2012 and 2013. In 2012-13 severe droughts followed by flooding led to an increase in the number of salmon dying due to amoebic gill disease.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) salmon is expected to have accounted for approximately one-fifth of all seafood trade in 2015. Consequently, Scottish salmon farmers have done well over the past 10 years, driven by rising global demand for salmon and higher salmon prices.
