The Test Drilling & Boring industry drills into the ground to test the attributes of the soil, measure ground heat, test for water reserves, monitor the build-up of gas under reclaimed land and sample for minerals below the earth's surface. The industry is one of the smallest in the construction sector and its performance fluctuates widely due to the influence of investment conditions in several key markets and the intensity of competition between the small number of specialist contractors. The industry will comprise approximately 235 firms and employ 1,500 people in 2011-12. This is down substantially from a record peak at about 2,000 people working for 265 firms in 2007-08.
