Motor vehicle maintenance and repair providers were not immune from the recession. Although new car sales have crashed and households and businesses are holding on to their vehicles for longer, demand for repair and maintenance services has been declining over the past five years. Poor consumer and business sentiment meant that consumers have postponed unnecessary expenditure and switched to cheaper independent providers. Car wash businesses also suffered as car owners chose to wash their vehicles at home. Industry revenue is forecast to decline by 2.0% per annum over the five years through 2011-12, to £18.4 billion.
