Before the financial crisis, fruit juice producers were growing well. Demand for fruit juices was underpinned by rising disposable income, increasing health consciousness and consumers' desire for convenience and premium products. Demand for smoothies in particular soared on the back of these trends. Since 2008, however, fruit juice has been among the worst performing beverage classes, with recessionary conditions leading consumers to trade down or across to carbonated soft drinks and more economical still beverages. A revenue decline of 0.5% is forecast for the Fruit Juice Production industry in 2011-12 as these trends continue. Industry revenue tends to be concentrated in regions traditionally focused on manufacturing activities and in regions close to major cities. Being close to major cities gives producers better access to resources such as labour and other inputs. Being located in proximity to customers also helps reduce distribution and transport costs, subsequently increasing delivery time to end markets.
